Urban and Spatial Planning

Urban design embraces all planning procedures and measures to organise and develop an urban environment.  Urban design is a strategic approach to all aspects of the development of natural and built environments at a local, regional and national level.  It takes into account:

  • Buildings for housing, work and social services
  • Street layout, traffic, parking, public transport, noise, pedestrian and lighting
  • Open spaces, environments for leisure and landscaping
  • Infrastructure services

It seeks to meet the needs and enhance the lives of the diverse range of people living and working within them, improving the quality of urban spaces whilst reducing the cost of development.  Good urban design balances the aesthetic with the functional.

In providing urban and spatial planning expertise we are not only following the vision of the "New Zealand Urban Design Protocol" but also our company's vision to create better-designed environments.

Our services include:

  • Defining zone and site uses; scoping potential development of an environment.
  • Site and context appraisals calling on other expertise where necessary (civil and geotech engineering, resource management, ecological services etc).
  • Masterplan development (supported by economical, environmental and social assessments).
  • Drafts and sketches leading to conceptual design.
  • Detailed planning and design of a project.
